Cape Verde
Cape Verde (aka the Cape Verde Islands) is a country and at the same time a group of islands, roughly 500 km off the west coast of Africa. The archipelago Ilhas de Cabo Because of its location relative to the Cabo Verde (Green Cape) in Senegal, the westernmost point of the African continent, called Verde. When the country became independent from Portugal (1975) the name was shortened to Cabo Verde, which in Dutch is corrupted to Cape Verde. It is one of the few African countries for which no vaccinations for tropical diseases are required.

Cape Verdeans
Cape Verde was uninhabited until the Portuguese arrived. They settled in 1462 in Santiago, and in 1589 the islands were a Portuguese colony. They were important as a stopover for ships to faraway places, and they formed an important location for the slave trade. The population is therefore arise from a mix of Portuguese colonists and African (ex-) slaves centuries rather isolated from the rest of the world lived. More than 74% is mulatto and therefore has both African and Portuguese ancestry.

Language: Crioulo
Although Portuguese is the official language, children learn at school, is spoken in Cape Verde predominantly Crioulo, a mixed language with Portuguese and African elements. There will also be a number of other creole dialects. When England ruled the waves, many Britons visited the islands, from Francis Drake to Charles Darwin. And so there is golf and cricket played, and you hear words like ariope (hurry up / shoot) blaquéfela (black man), bossomane (boss), salongue (goodbye), ovacote (overcoat) and chatope! (shut up!).

Food: Cachupa
Cape Verde is a poor country. Yet there are all inhabited islands restaurant (you) s to find where you can eat simple but good (potatoes and fish). Much more likely you will find small shops where both water and other drinks and food is sold. Fresh or canned. Cachupa is the national specialty: a dish of boiled corn, beans, cassava, sweet potato and herbs, along with chicken or other meat. It is not to get into any restaurant and Cachupa preparation is quite long.
